Oatmeal: the Perfect Travel Food

Imagine you can only choose one dish to eat while traveling? Going to many places in the world, some more familiar, some more exotic, what would you choose? For the me answer is obvious: oatmeal.

It’s such a versatile food, and there is so many awesome combinations possible. Let’s look at the PROs, and CONs of oatmeal.

PRO’s for oatmeal

CON’s for oatmeal

let me know if you found one 🙂

In many places of the world 500g of oatmeal cost more or less 0,5-1 Euro, and that lasts for many portions. And it can be combined with regional and seasonal fruits.

So, what does it take to make it travel ready? I recommend you the following hardware 🙂

  • First get a portable muesli cup, the ones from Mepal are awesome
  • Then also get a spoon you can always carry with you, or even better a Spork (a mixture of a spoon and fork)
  • An extra container to carry with you the oatmeal in

Images of my setup will follow in the future.

Now that you got the hardware, let’s get to the best part, the tasty muesli bowl itself. You can choose:

Evergreen setup – my go to:

  • Oatmeal, natural joghurt, banana and/or fresh blueberry, chia Seeds,

Advanced setup – for the muesli pro’s among us:

  • Of course oatmeal itself
  • First pick a base, this can be:
    • Milk-based with: joghurt (ideally natural), milk or something like soy- or cashew-based milk
  • Then add some fresh or frozen fruits to it. My favorites are:
    • banana or apple
    • blueberries, raspberries or strawberries
  • Some extra protein – this can be:
    • Chia seeds, or any other seeds you like
    • nuts, e.g. cashews, or almonds (ideally witout salt)
    • protein powder, or a protein bar added in
  • Extra toppings for taste

That’s about it – now you can make healthy, cheap and tasty travel food. Enjoy!! 🙂
